Confession: I Played Video Games at Work... and Got More Done

Hi! It’s Joel from Lofizen.

I have a confession to make…

Last week, I played video games during my work day. But here's the twist: it actually helped me get more productive work done.

“Wait… What?? How???”

Let me explain.

I was having one of those weeks. Mentally drained, unmotivated, and feeling completely under the weather. Just the thought of opening my email or tackling my to-do list felt like pushing two magnets against each other.

But there was one thing I felt like doing: self-soothing with video games.

So, I made a deal with myself.

“Just one.”

Kind of like promising yourself only one chocolate after dinner to avoid devouring the whole box, I decided to approach procrastination the same way.

I told myself: If I do ONE work task, I can play ONE round of my game.

And suddenly, I wanted to open my work email.

Within five minutes, I had written and sent a short report.
Ten seconds later, I was in the game.

The surprising part? I didn’t feel guilty. For once, I was procrastinating with permission, and it felt… good.

After my first game round, I found myself eager to knock out another task—just so I could earn another round. I kept going back and forth, and by the end of the day, I realized something incredible:

I’d had my most productive day all week.

Here’s why I think this works:

  • Reward Systems Work: Giving yourself a small reward (like a game or a treat) after completing a task taps into the brain’s dopamine system.

  • Short Bursts of Focus: Knowing I had a game waiting for me kept me focused on completing tasks quickly and efficiently.

  • No Guilt, No Burnout: Instead of beating myself up for procrastinating, I leaned into it—on my terms—and avoided the cycle of guilt and avoidance.

Open the notes function inside the app and add three to-do tasks you want to get done today but don’t feel like doing. Then, after each one, write things you want to do as rewards.

As you complete each task, enjoy your reward guilt-free. You'll be surprised how much more productive (and motivated) you can feel!
